Westchester County: Private-Club Feel Just Beyond the City.

Westchester County delivers upscale public golf amid wooded hills, reservoir land, and Hudson River views, where elevation and rock outcrops shape strategic layouts that feel closer to private clubs than classic munis. The region sits just north of New York City yet plays like a launching pad for Hudson Highlands adventures, from hikes above the river to art parks, river towns, and wineries that turn a golf day into a full weekend. Proximity to Manhattan rewards quick escapes, yet top tracks require committed drives through affluent suburbs to reach their secluded charm.

Pound Ridge Golf Club – Pound Ridge, NY

Architect: Pete Dye (2008)

Carved from stubborn Westchester stone, Pound Ridge showcases Dye at his most exacting, with rock walls, wetlands, and forced carries demanding precise lines. Fairways narrow amid fescue, punishing misses while pristine conditioning justifies premium fees. Lower handicappers relish the tournament-caliber test; higher ones may find it unforgiving. The par-3 15th over trouble to a slender, boomerang-like green captures its identity: dramatic, beautifully presented, and unforgiving if you are not fully committed.

Hudson Hills Golf Course – Ossining, NY

Architect: Mark Mungeam (2004)

Hudson Hills is the flagship of Westchester County’s six-course public portfolio, the newest and best-conditioned, and routed over hills near the Hudson. It has a reputation for being one of the county tracks where you get private-club feel in a public setting, with firm fairways, quick greens, and better daily conditioning than its siblings. There are a few funky spots where even well-struck shots seem at the mercy of the golf gods, especially through the gauntlet of No. 7 and No. 8, where lost balls are common even for good players. Straight drivers who accept some bad breaks and stay patient really enjoy this one.

Centennial Golf Course – Valhalla, NY

Architect: Robert Trent Jones Sr. (1964)

Set on rolling estate land once home to historic Valhalla estate, Centennial delivers classic RTJ scale with wide fairways, deep bunkers, and large, undulating greens that favor big swings and strong short games. The routing climbs through woods and open meadows, blending reachable par-5s with long par-3s over valleys. Recent upgrades suit a broad range of players seeking pace and classic American design.

Plan Your Next Trip the Right Way

Insider Notes:

If you are a mid or high handicap, seriously consider moving up a tee box at Pound Ridge on your first visit; it is expensive and tough, so protecting enjoyment is worth more than playing every yard on the card.

For a pure golf day even further north than Westchester County, The Links at Union Vale is a favorite add-on, with an open, linksy feel that contrasts nicely with the tree-lined, target-style golf closer to the city.

Bally’s at Ferry Point makes a stellar bonus if routing via LGA or JFK; its linksy Nicklaus layout, fast greens, NYC skyline views, and solid pace deliver premium quality despite the premium price.

Fall foliage transforms Westchester's wooded fairways and Hudson Valley drives into a beauty of color; time September-October visits for peak vibrancy on all three courses and surrounding roads.

Westchester County Airport (HPN) is the locals’ move if you are flying in specifically for this corridor, dramatically cutting down on New York City traffic and putting you closer to both the Westchester courses and the Hudson Valley.
