Santa Barbara: Coastal Golf and Scenic Fairways.

Santa Barbara anchors a stretch of Central Coast golf that spreads from oceanfront bluffs in Goleta to harbor-side links in Ventura and valley ground in Ojai. Soule Park and Olivas Links are 35–50 minutes from town, so this is more a cluster of day-trip rounds than a compact resort bubble. It works especially well if you stitch it together with neighboring collections, since staying on the west side of Santa Barbara or in Goleta also puts you within easy reach of the Santa Ynez Valley courses inland. The region blends Pacific views, small-town main streets, and wine country, so a two or three round trip can feel like a broader Central Coast sampler rather than a single stop.

Sandpiper Golf Club – Goleta, CA

Architect: William F. Bell (1972)

Sandpiper runs along bluffs west of town, with several holes playing right at the edge of the Pacific and others stepping back into a corridor of coastal brush and eucalyptus. The back nine, especially holes 10 and 11, is the star, offering cliffside tee shots and approaches that feel far more “bucket list” than most public West Coast options. Greens are famously quick and often slope from back to front, so the safest play is almost always to keep the ball under the hole and accept uphill putts even if they are longer. The staff generally does a good job spacing groups and keeping the course walkable, even when it is busy.

Soule Park Golf Course – Ojai, CA

Architects: William F. Bell (1962), Gil Hanse & Jim Wagner renovation (2005)

Soule Park sits in the Ojai Valley, where mountains frame an open, walkable property that now feels like a minimalist California classic rather than a basic muni. The Hanse and Wagner renovation opened sightlines, reworked bunkering, and created subtly contoured greens, turning modest-fee golf into something architecture fans travel for. Strategy is in the diagonals: plenty of fairway shows, but barrancas and angled hazards define the best lines for those willing to challenge them. It has become one of those rare courses where design nerds and casual locals are both happy to loop 36 in a day.

Olivas Links – Ventura, CA

Architect: Forrest Richardson (2006)

Olivas Links spreads across flat ground near Ventura Harbor, playing as a true coastal links style course with few trees, wide corridors, and constant breeze. Gentle mounding, native rough, and multi tiered greens add interest without heavy forced carries, so the real challenge is controlling trajectory and spin when the wind is up. Locals love it as a value play near the ocean and an easy walk, noting that reclaimed-water irrigation and the ability to use salty sources help keep turf healthy compared with more inland tracks.

Plan Your Next Trip the Right Way

Insider Notes:

At Sandpiper, twilight is the locals’ move: you get a softer rate, fewer groups, and some of the most serene ocean views on the coast as the sun drops behind the marine layer.

Soule Park is best enjoyed on foot with a light bag; Ojai mornings are quiet and walking lets you appreciate how Hanse tied the bunkering and greens into the natural slopes rather than just sprinting from cart path to ball.

Santa Barbara Golf Club, the in-town muni, is a sneaky add for a relaxed extra round; it is affordable, walkable, and beloved by locals who treat it as their practice and social loop when they are not splurging on Sandpiper.

Ventura days line up well with Olivas Links and the harbor; play a morning round, then wander the nearby pier or old downtown for tacos and a beer instead of racing back up to Santa Barbara.

If your golf is concentrated around Sandpiper and the city, rideshares can work, but once you add Ojai and Ventura into the mix, renting a car makes the trip feel smoother and opens up better food, wine, and beach options between rounds.
