San Antonio: A Well-Rounded Texas Golf Destination.
Set between San Antonio’s historic core and the rolling limestone hills to the north, this region blends classic parkland golf with dramatic Hill Country terrain. Courses range from tree-lined golden-age layouts to modern designs that move through canyons, ridgelines, and exposed rock. One of the area’s advantages is how accessible the top golf is: many of the best courses sit just minutes from the airport and downtown, making it easy to maximize both golf and city time. With its mix of scenery, variety, and history, San Antonio delivers a well-rounded golf destination that pairs naturally with the River Walk, the missions, and the nearby Hill Country.
Featured Golf Courses
The Quarry Golf Course – San Antonio, TX
Architect: Keith Foster (1993)
The Quarry blends two distinct environments: a traditional front nine followed by a dramatic back nine routed through a reclaimed limestone quarry. Sheer rock walls and exposed stone shape the setting on the closing holes, where swirling winds and elevation shifts add a layer of strategic challenge. The par-3s over and along the quarry are among the most memorable shots in the region, giving the round a unique sense of place.
La Cantera Resort (Resort & Palmer Courses) – San Antonio, TX
Architect: Jay Morrish / Tom Weiskopf (Resort Course, 1995); Arnold Palmer / Ed Seay (Palmer Course, 2001)
La Cantera features two Hill Country layouts that share big views and bold elevation changes while offering different personalities. The Resort Course, a former Texas Open host, plays across ridgelines with broad fairways, strategic bunkering, and elevated tee shots. One standout moment comes at the par-4 7th, where the tee sits high above the fairway with theme-park coasters visible in the distance. The Palmer Course feels more secluded and sculpted, weaving through rock outcrops and tree-lined corridors with tighter landing areas and a greater emphasis on shaping shots.
Brackenridge Park Golf Course – San Antonio, TX
Architect: A.W. Tillinghast (1916; later renovations)
Brackenridge Park is San Antonio’s original municipal course and a historic anchor of Texas golf. Its gently rolling parkland setting features tree-lined fairways, classic bunkering, and distinctive square-edged greens that create an old-world feel. The layout is shorter by modern standards but rewards accuracy and smart angles into subtly contoured putting surfaces. It remains the most authentic expression of “San Antonio city golf” with its history, charm, and walkability.
Plan Your Next Trip the Right Way
Insider Notes:
Wind & Elevation: Can affect club selection around La Cantera and on the Quarry’s back nine, so prioritize solid contact and smart targets over chasing yardage.
Early Tee Times at The Quarry: Are ideal; the back nine sits lower in the quarry, where afternoon heat can feel more intense.
Mix city golf & Hill Country Golf for the Best Experience: Pair Brackenridge Park or The Quarry with a River Walk or Pearl District afternoon, then plan a separate day for La Cantera with time to enjoy the views and resort atmosphere.
Food Experience: Build in one non-golf evening for classic San Antonio food, the River Walk, or a visit to the missions. Course locations are close enough that you won’t spend much time driving.
