Angeles National Golf Club – Sunland, CA

Architect: Nicklaus Design (2004)

Angeles National delivers a distinctive fusion of desert styling and mountain terrain, creating a visually expressive layout at the base of the Angeles National Forest. The routing threads through broad washes and rolling ground, offering seamless transitions and strong directional cues. Strategy balances aggressive lines with safer, wider options that reward precision and planning. It feels like a modern, confident test where bold visuals and demanding shot values go hand in hand.

Trump National Golf Club, Los Angeles – Rancho Palos Verdes, CA

Architect: Pete Dye (original); Redesigned by Donald Trump & Tom Fazio (reopened 2006)

Set on dramatic bluffs overlooking the Pacific, Trump National Los Angeles offers ocean views on nearly every hole. Routing carries golfers along cliff edges, through valleys, and across terraced slopes, creating constant visual and shot-making variety. Contoured greens and thoughtfully placed hazards ensure that every hole requires smart decision-making. The overall impression is high drama and polished presentation, with the coastal setting as the defining feature.

Oak Creek Golf Club – Irvine, CA

Architect: Tom Fazio (1996)

Oak Creek flows gently amid lush trees, lakes, and softly rolling terrain, quietly beautiful and inviting rather than dramatic. Fairways are framed by foliage, with water features and bunkers enhancing aesthetics as much as penalizing poor swings. Strong conditioning and a friendly routing make it a peaceful escape from the urban bustle, offering a relaxing but rewarding round for all skill levels.

Insider Notes:

Peak Hours: These courses, and many others around LA, can play tough and slow in peak hours, so early tee times help with both scoring and pace of play.

Industry Hills Golf Club – Ike Course: A true championship test with long, rolling fairways and large, undulating greens that reward precision and strategy.

Golf Architecture Fans: Consider adding Rustic Canyon in Moorpark, a Gil Hanse and Geoff Shackelford design known for minimalist, lay-of-the-land routing and excellent value.

Food Experience: From food trucks to upscale dining, LA offers exceptional variety: Grand Central Market in DTLA for eclectic bites, Koreatown for standout BBQ, and Silver Lake for artisanal cafés and a neighborhood vibe.

Outdoor Options: Abundant, hiking in Runyon Canyon, Griffith Park, or the Santa Monica Mountains, biking The Strand, or visiting beaches like El Matador, Zuma, or Manhattan Beach.

Neighborhood: Downtown LA, Silver Lake, Echo Park, and Culver City each offer unique character, street art, local shops, and boutique restaurants that pair well with a golf-focused stay.

Commute: When traveling between courses, avoid rush hour (roughly 7–10 a.m. and 4–7 p.m.). Use Waze or Google Maps to monitor traffic, and be open to surface streets instead of freeways when faster.
