Play the Best of Austin
The Golf Club at Star Ranch – Hutto, TX
Architect: Carter Morrish, Jay Morrish, Roy Bechtol & Randy Russell (2001)
Star Ranch sits northeast of Austin and offers a well-groomed par-71 layout with a clean, modern look that avoids feeling overly manufactured. The design is accessible for a wide range of handicaps, with generous landing areas and forward-tee options that make it friendly without removing all challenge. A handful of holes still require commitment and thoughtful positioning. Its location near Toll 130 makes it easy to reach from much of Austin while often avoiding inner-city traffic, allowing it to fit neatly into both business-trip and weekend itineraries.
Crystal Falls Golf Club – Leander, TX
Architect: Jack Miller (1990)
Crystal Falls occupies elevated terrain above Leander and leans into its topography more than most suburban Austin courses. Fairways traverse ridgelines and dip into natural low areas, creating shots that frequently play longer or shorter than the yardage suggests once elevation and wind are factored in. The routing delivers a steady mix of uphill approaches, downhill tee shots, and green complexes that reward controlling trajectory as much as distance. For many locals, Crystal Falls remains one of the best under-the-radar options in the area, offering a genuine taste of Hill Country elevation without a long drive into the region.
Morris Williams Golf Course – Austin, TX
Architect: Leon Howard (1964; later renovations)
Morris Williams is a classic Austin municipal located just east of downtown and near the University of Texas campus. Formerly home to the UT golf team, it served as a training ground for players such as Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw. The routing blends tree-lined corridors with more open holes, and in several spots the rapidly growing Austin skyline comes into view. Among locals, it is often considered the city’s best muni thanks to its layout, walkability, and convenient location. A recently renovated restaurant and patio have become a lively neighborhood gathering spot, drawing both golfers and locals for tacos, cocktails, or a relaxed place to work as groups pass through.
Insider Notes:
Butler Pitch & Putt Downtown: Offers a quintessential Austin golf experience. This nine-hole par-3, open since the 1940s, features skyline views and a highly social atmosphere. It is walk-up only, and pace can slow later in the day, so earlier arrivals are rewarded.
Municipal Courses: Such as Morris Williams and Lions, online tee sheets fill quickly, but singles and pairs who arrive in person often find walk-on availability if they remain flexible
Barton Creek Resort: The area’s most exclusive stay-and-play option, featuring four resort courses and dramatic canyon holes. Beginning in 2026, it will host a PGA TOUR event.
Barton Springs Pool and Deep Eddy: Are iconic, spring-fed pools near downtown and popular with locals looking to cool off or unwind after a hot round.
